WHAT IS GIFT CITY?

What is an IFSC?

IFSC stands for International Financial Services Centre. It is a specially designated zone within a country that is treated as foreign territory for financial purposes — meaning the rules, taxes, and regulations are aligned with global financial centres like Singapore, Dubai, and London, rather than domestic Indian norms.

Who Regulates GIFT City? Meet IFSCA.

IFSCA — the International Financial Services Centres Authority — was established under the IFSCA Act, 2019. It acts as a single-window regulator, unlike India's domestic system where multiple regulators (RBI, SEBI, IRDAI) oversee different sectors.

This means if you want to set up a bank, an insurance company, a mutual fund, or a fintech business at GIFT City — you deal with one regulator only. This dramatically simplifies compliance, speeds up approvals, and reduces operational overhead.

One of GIFT City's biggest advantages is that all transactions happen in foreign currency — no mandatory INR conversion. Business can be undertaken in USD, EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, AUD, CHF, HKD, SGD, AED, RUB, SEK, NOK, NZD, and DKK. Additionally, IFSCA permits IFSC entities to defray their administrative expenses in Indian Rupees.
